The Low Down | Brunch n Grind

Kat and Vanessa, aka Brunch n Grind, are on a mission to try and review all the hottest fitness studios and brunches across the capital. Their manta ‘Train hard, brunch harder’ encourages balance in the form of a sweaty HIIT session followed by a stack of delicious pancakes!

ZAKTI: Tell us about your blog Brunch n Grind?

Our blog is a one-stop shop for the hottest fitness and food trends across London, with some beauty and wellness thrown in too. From instagrammable brunch spots and must-have activewear to new studio openings and summer gymkit essentials, there’s always plenty of inspo for your weekend.

We focus on balancing health and fitness with a demanding career and social life, so our content isn’t about getting razor-sharp abs or clean eating – it’s about finding a balance and enjoying life to the fullest!

ZAKTI: What’s a typical workday like for you?

Our days are jam packed! We head to an early morning workout or breakfast meeting for 8am and by 9am we head to Telegraph HQ to start our day jobs. We both work on the advertising team, creating content for brand partnerships so a day could include anything from building websites, meeting with clients and coming up with new proactive pitch ideas. After work, we head to press launches, restaurant openings or try new studio classes out. There’s never a dull moment!

ZAKTI: What are your style-hacks to take you through all the activities in your day?

Kat: Blotting papers are my saviour, I take them everywhere – they mattify my skin in an instant and take unnecessary shine away in seconds! Kink-free hair bands are also a godsend – I can go from barre to bar without ruining my freshly tonged hair.

Vanessa: I swear by dry shampoo, a spritz of Batiste hides a multitude of sins post-workout. And don’t underestimate the power of a good lippy – a slick of pillar-box red lipstick before a long run or PT session helps me tackle it with confidence. For me, it’s all about mindset, so if I start a session feeling strong, I get better results.

ZAKTI: What’s your weekend style?

Vanessa: Since launching Brunch n Grind at the start of the year, we’ve both been living in our activewear much more than usual! When I’m not in lycra, I’m obsessed with vintage clothes, so often wear a sixties-style shift dress and accessorise with pastel pink hair.

Kat: My go-to look for weekend brunching is a pair of cute dungarees, converse and a top knot!

ZAKTI: How do you like to keep active?

Vanessa: We walk into work when we can. Not only does it get a bit of exercise in, but we get chance to talk about the blog and hatch our plans for world domination! When it comes to fitness, we’re slowly working out our strengths and weaknesses. We’re both huge yoga fans, Kat loves weights and barre while I’m more into running and spinning.

Kat: We’ve tried all kinds of classes since launching the blog, we try and push ourselves out of our comfort zone to show our readers that anything is possible and that there’s a form of exercise out there for everybody. We’ve tried kickboxing and animal flow recently and we’re keen to try new things out like trapese and trampolining!

ZAKTI: We spotted our Zakti gear on your Instagram, what did you like about this look?

Kat: Kimberly Wyatt’s collection is my favourite, she really knows how to put the fashion into fitness – I live in her black and white marble range. I love the mesh detailing on the leggings and the super-high waistband. I’ve got my eye on Zakti’s Reveal leggings next!

Vanessa: The Reveal leggings are my absolute fave! They go with everything and are so flattering. I also love the Tranquility sports bra – it offers good support and has double-strap detail at the back.

ZAKTI: You’re always so busy on social media, how do you manage to stay on top of it and stay balanced?

Having each other helps! We often take it in turns to look after our social channels and posts each day. We’re also pretty good at recognising when we’re working too much and burning out. If one of us is feeling tired or run down the other one steps in and takes over. A team effort!

ZAKTI: What are your three tips to keeping fit and healthy?

Kat: Drink water, eat your veg and sleep! It really is that simple. I aim for two litres of water a day, lots of nutritious food Monday to Friday and 8 hours of sleep a night. It keeps me feeling healthy and gives me the energy I require for London life.

Vanessa: My three tips are: variation, healthy snacks and rest days.
We try and get to at least three classes per week and we mix up our training all the time so a week could include a HIIT, yoga and spin class to cover off conditioning, cardio and flexibility.
I’ve recently replaced my daily chocolate fix with almonds and blueberries to reduce my sugar intake. I’m a chocoholic so now I indulge at the weekend instead of every day!
The most important tip of all is to listen to your body and know when to have a rest day. There’s no point pushing through three gym classes a week if you’re feeling tired and low. Recognise when you need to take a break and don’t beat yourself up for a boozy brunch or missed gym session. You’re here for a good time, not a long time!

We’re bringing Brunch n Grind to life! We want to run a series of events in London to share our love of fitness and food with our growing community.
